Oatmeal, Halloween and the Tongue

Last week Jakoby had his 4 month pediatrician appointment. He has doubled his birth weight to 15 lbs 7 oz, lengthened out to 25.5 inches from head to toe. And his head size has increased to 44.25 cm which is in the 91st percentile for his age! He also received two more shots, smiling through the first one, and bursting into tears for the second.

They also told us we could start feeding him "solid" foods so on Wednesday he had his first taste of oatmeal. He did very well opening his mouth to accept the food without having more than half of it ending up on his bib.

Friday was of course Halloween. He had a short costume session with his friend Anna.

And to end this little update, today when I came home from work, Jakoby began demonstrating how far he could stick out his tongue and how long he could do so. He is growing so fast it is amazing ... which is exactly what so many have told would happen.

Walk'n the Greenway

Saturday we were initially planning driving along the coast south of Boston but in the morning learned that the inaugural celebration of the Rose Kennedy Greenway was going on. This greenway, or series of urban parks, is located along the former I-93 raised expressway going through Boston. For the most part, where the expressway moved underground there now exists these parks at street level. These additions to the city are the most beautiful and arguably best part of the $22 billion boondoggle known as the Big Dig.

In any case, we did change our plans to take in the festivities which included concerts, a farmers market, demonstrations, free food and activities for the kiddies (those over a few months of age). We only took a few pictures of the trip and surprisingly almost none of them really show you the Greenway itself. Our walk took us from Columbus Park to Chinatown and back. Thank the Lord for such a beautiful day.

Truth in the Coin Shop

"And who decides what the values of these old coins are? The coins might bear the likeness of a politician. They might bear the name of the nation-state. But these pictures and slogans are merely interlopers on the real point. What you hold is valuable not because some legislature, treasury department, or central bank says it is valuable. Its worth was and is dictated by the market, which is to say, the choices and values of human beings. No government can add to or take away this value except by physically manipulating the coin itself."

A Change In Plans

Our vacation plans were derailed this past Friday. The itinerary originally went as such: Drive to the Finger Lakes in New York Friday evening and Saturday morning, attend a wedding on Saturday and then drive to Ontario to visit friends for a few days before coming back on Thursday. All that change very quickly in the wee hours of Friday morning which resulted in a weekend stay at a lovely resort by the name of Children's Hospital.

Codex Sinaiticus Online

The Codex Sinaiticus is to be posted in digital form on the internet over the coming year. Although, not a complete manuscript, the Codex Sinaiticus dates to the 4th century BC and is the oldest known copy of the Bible. If you can read Greek, take a look. If not, you can at least read about it on their site or check out the Wikipedia entry.

A Baby Is Born

Praise the Lord. On Monday, June 23 at 9:30 AM, Jakoby William entered the world. After 30 hours of contractions and 1.5 hours of pushing, this 7 pound 5 ounce, 19 and three quarter inch boy joined the family. Thank you for your prayers.

Now that we have found an internet terminal here at the hospital, we will post some pictures as soon as we can.

Pregnancy Update

We are now just over 4 weeks to our due date. Crazy, isn't it? Just wanted to relay a few items. Three weekends ago we attend a Prepared Childbirth class conducted by Isis Maternity, hosted at Wild Child in Arlington. This is not the breathing class most people think of, rather it is a class on the logistics of the days leading up to and immediately following childbirth. And two weekends ago we took a guided tour of Beth Israel Deaconess' maternity ward. It was good to know A) how to get to the hospital and B) where to take Becky once we got there. This is very important information. And the day before that was Becky's baby shower hosted by her mother. Our thanks to the friends and family members who came to celebrate.

Last week the doctor told Becky that the baby is currently a little above average in terms of weight. This equates to about an 8 pound baby at birth.

Also thought I should announce that Becky has started a blog about our attempts to use cloth diapers from planning and researching to first use to ... well, we just have to see.

Baby in Three Dimensions

Around week 18 we had gone in to get deep ultrasound (where they check on the baby's development). However at the end of the appointment we found that the printer attached to the machine was not functioning and therefore did not go home with any pictures. The doctor's office felt bad about this and later called us about getting 3D imaging of the baby ... for free. This particular office was getting a new 3D ultrasound machine and technician would need some time learning the new machine. We accepted the offer for Becky to be a test subject and by the end of it we had many shots of the baby's face, feet and other parts. The technician was also able to show us the heart, lungs, and his brain. It was an amazing experience.

Back From San Diego

The Babymoon is over (sigh). It was a full week of sightseeing in, unfortunately, not your typical Southern California weather. Despite some days being overcast and/or raining we visited Point Loma, La Jolla, Balboa Park, the Zoo as well as traveled out to Los Angeles and Joshua Tree National Park. We had a great time relaxing and sightseeing.

Of course there are many photos of the trip.

Baby Update

We went for our big ultrasound today and the baby was being very cooperative, we were able to clearly see that it is going to be a boy! We are so excited and now have the daunting task of coming up with a name for the baby (we'll take suggestions). The baby looks healthy and has a pretty umbilical cord (according to the technician). The expected due date is June 23rd.

7500 miles later

We just wrapped up a 7,562 mile trip across the country. We went to 28 states in 16 days ... if you average that out it's about 2 states a day. The country is large and very diverse, well except for all of those fields of corn. If you plan on taking this trip, we highly suggest that you rent a car, there are many mountains and passes that require frequent use of the brakes!!

We saw quite the array of animals on the trip...we saw the typical: crows, squirrels, and chipmunks...but we also saw
yellow-bellied marmots, herds of bison, baby bears, bald-eagles, hawks, coyote, moose, elk, deer, long horned animals, lizards, and goats!

We also learned that there is a major difference between a 1 diamond and 3 diamond hotel (as rated by AAA) and that the price tag does not always mean a great hotel.

We took many wonderful pictures and are working to get them posted. For now you can look at the samples we posted while on the road. Week One Samples and Week Two Samples.

This past Saturday Becky and I went out for our first long motorcycle ride of the season. We met up with the "His Riders" chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association down in Hopkinton. From there our 100 mile journey took us Southwest into Connecticut and then North to Barre just West of Worcester. Our destination was "The Cross", an amazing 200 by 150 foot cross which is visible from the sky and has the 10 Commandments painted there on. You can also see the "God's Wisdom" written in trees and white marble. Other additions have been made that cannot be seen from the satellite photo. John Harty gave a tour of the grounds. His stories are amazing and his love for the Lord is evident.

Here are some photos from the ride. Photos courtesy of Steve H.

New Life Lamb and Near Death Duck

This morning as I made my way to work, I witnessed a duck's near-death experience. On a section of road adjacent to a pond, I noticed a mallard duck attempting to cross the road. This poor duck was mere millimeters from getting squashed by the Audi in front of me. The wind from the car tire knocked him back towards the curb where he retreated up to the soft grass. Whew, that was close.

On a happier note, we went out to Old Sturbridge Village on the 24th of March and were able to be in the presence of new birth. Barely two hours before our arrival twin lambs has been born. In fact, the umbilical cord were still present. In addition to those new borns, there were about 5 or 6 other lambs jumping around with the older sheep. Also of note was one large sheep who was the base voice of the group. Its low frequency baying lacked any of the pulsing that you generally associate with sheep calls. It was almost comical.

Things to do in Montreal

Bonjour! We just got back from a very chilly trip to Montreal. The long weekend was the perfect excuse for a quick trip to our Northern friends. The drive home was a bit slick....and lacking plows.. but we made it home safe.

Our favorite parts of the trip included:

A trip to the Biodome, where animals live in their natural habitats and the seasons change!
A trip to Notre Dame and an amazing lights show
Old Montreal---no ice sculptures yet!!
The Underground... there were malls and museums and train stations all underground; 18 miles worth!!
Cold....it was quite chilly
Chez Cora-- the best breakfast in Montreal
A free organ concert at St Joseph's Oratory and amazing views of the city and nearly 300 Nativity scenes from around the world!!

Patron Saint of the Internet and of Computers

I just learned today that the Catholic church as a patron saint for the internet and computers: Saint Isidore of Seville.

Almighty and eternal God, who created us in Thy image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thy only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, bishop and doctor, during our journeys through the Internet we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rude Awakening

At about 2:45 AM, I was woken from my slumber by the sound of my (closed) bedroom door banging around as if a big breeze had moved through our house. A bit worried, I explored but found no open/unlocked doors or windows. Finding nothing out of order I go back to sleep.

Come to find out on the morning news that there was a massive explosion at an ink factory in Danvers ... "just before 3 AM". We live about 10 miles North West of Danvers as the crow flies. According to boston.com, 30 miles away in Weston, the Boston College Observatory registered 0.5 on the Richter scale.
