February Already?

While it does mean it might be warm enough in two months to get the motorcycle back out, but wow, is it really February already? Where did January go?

One week was taken up by going to Alabama for business, but it just so happened that Jakoby decided to get sick that week with some sort of viral infection, leaving Mommy to stay home from work most of the week. And that is on top of the ear infection the previous weekend AND the one two weekends before that. Yes, he already has tubes in the ears but those just relieve the pressure and pain associated with, not prevents, ear infections.

Other than that he is a very happy boy who had a wonderful holiday season (frequent updates are obviously not my thing). Lots of fun with family including a road trip to the Baltimore area just after Christmas where my sister and her husband quickly setup their recently acquired home for the week long visitation. While there Jakoby took in some culture and learning in the form of two Smithsonian museums, the National Museum of Dentistry (very interesting actually), and the B&O Railroad Museum.

Speaking of trains, Jakoby loves the large wooden trainset he received for Christmas (Melissa&Doug). And that's a good thing because Mommy went out early on Black Friday to get it at a nicely reduced price. He also later received a mechanical Thomas the Train from his grandmother which he was only slightly excited to get.

Jakoby is growing up so fast, as so many have told us he would ... why must they be so right? He's learned many more words, has been good about pickup up things when asked, using forks and spoons and we are already impressed with how he holds a writing implement (we don't know where he learned it). He is also learning a good deal about water fountain etiquette, oral hygiene and snow removal techniques. What will the next three months bring?

Two Wheels Today, Shovel Tomorrow

Today is December 4th. I rode my motorcycle to work today. Tomorrow, if the weather reports are correct, I may see three to six inches of snow. Gotta love New England.

Sunday Update: As I was sitting up front in the orchestra before the start of the 11;30 service, I saw a man walk in with his motorcycle jacket and helmet. I assume it wasn't for a snowmobile as only 1 inch of snow fell overnight. A brave man for sure. It was only 35 degrees out when we went home at noon.

Now 15 Months Old

How bad am I at posting to my own blog? At last post Jakoby had just turned 1 year old ... now he's 1.25 years old. So what has he done in those 3 months you ask?

In the travel departement he has been to the Big Apple, camped in Vermont, gone out of the country to Ontario, Canada, and spent a lot of time on the beaches of Ogunquit. Locally, Jakoby had great fun picking blueberries, cleaning the house, playing in the local pool, visited Newport, RI, picked apples, deciding whether to become a pumpkin inspector or an office worker and learned to drive.

On a personal note, he is now up to 25 pounds in weight and is running everywhere. For a few months now Jakoby has been drinking slowly increasing measures of lacose free formula. That has gone well so this week he has started on to the next step up to lactose-free milk. If all goes well he'll be drinking regular milk in no time. Also, this week we learned that Jakoby will need to get tubes in both of his years due to persistent fluid since the winter. Hopefully this will keep him from ear infections this coming winter. Other than a bit a fever when his first molar came in he has been very health and full of energy. Thanks be to God.

Cousin

Jakoby now has a cousin (on his mommy's side) and is a cousin. Cousin Liam was born on Friday, weighing in at 6lb 10oz. Baby and parents came home today and we were able to go see them. Its amazing how quickly you forget the small size of a newborn and how your arm does't hurt after holding one for more than 5 minutes. Jakoby was very good with the baby, giving him kisses upon request. We don't think he knew what was going on but soon he will realize that he has competition for attention.

NYC and Quechee

We didn't go far for the 4th of July weekend going to the Ecotarium on Saturday with Takashi and daughter Anna and to visit Grandma and Grandpa T on Sunday. However, we did go to New York City the weekend before and to Quechee, VT the weekend after.

In NYC, we were able to visit with three sets of family and friends over our three day trip. We stayed at the Grand Union Hotel (nice accommodations by the way) not too far from the Empire State Building and Grand Central. From there it was pretty easy to get around except for getting the stroller through the subway turnstiles. On Saturday we hung out with Cousins Kelly and Chris, with whom we went to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, walked the Brooklyn Bridge and got caught in a down pour in Washington Square. On Sunday we met up with them again at Central Park to walk around. Mid afternoon we said our goodbyes and then took a train out to Harrison, NY to visit friends Greg and Kelly for dinner. Finally on Monday morning we went to breakfast with our friends Wayne and Erin and their daughter Sadie (with whom it was our first meeting) before driving back home. We sure know how to pack a lot into one weekend.

The weekend following the 4th, we headed to Quechee State Park (pronounced KWEE-chee) for some camping with friends Andy and Cari and their son Levi, who is just 3 months older than Jakoby. We did some hiking by the Quechee Gorge, visited the Billings Farm and Museum in Woodstock and weathered two nasty thunderstorms. At the end of the weekend, after packing up the site, we made quick visits to Quechee Gorge Village for some shopping and a train ride and then out to Sugarbush Farm for some local made cheese and farm made maple syrup. After that we headed home to dry out our camp equipment and give a bath to the dirt magnet named Jakoby.

Happy 1st Birthday Jakoby

Today Jakoby has officially provided us with one year of joy and wonder. He did not seem to understand this as he was being clingy and cranky before heading off to day care, thou I attribute that to him needing more sleep. Despite this morning's episode, we could not have hoped for a more happy, joyful and loving little boy. We thank God every day for the blessing that he has given us.

Jakoby was lucky enough to get two parties over this weekend full of friends and family. Here are the photos ( and more and more). Saturday's party was a little rough for him as he was still getting over the stomach bug he had during the week and didn't get quite enough of a morning nap. Sunday morning he slept much better and this time had plenty of energy for digging into his birthday (soy-free/dairy-free) chocolate cup cake. Happy birthday Jakoby.

The website is back.

Some of you may have noticed that my website was down for a week or so. I was having an unknown problem with my network and/or server and have built a replacement server this past week. Last night was finally able to reinstate the website for your viewing pleasure. Hopefully things are all running smoothly (if not, let me know in the comments). After getting it set back up, I immediately uploaded some Jakoby pictures for your viewing pleasure, although there are many more that still need to be added.

The new server is much quieter and runs cooler than the previous machine. It is also more powerful while using less energy. At some point I will put together a report covering the build and the transferring of the website over to it.

I also have plans in mind to change this website to use a different content management system (CSV) which may run better and provide me with better set of tools to run it. Keep an eye out for a redesign.

I have not fixed the emailing problem yet. I have found instructions online that may fix this, I just need to go try them.

WRX Sold And Gone

This may come as a surprise to some, but last week I sold my 2002 Subaru WRX. Oh sad day. It provided me with a little over 8 years and 94.6k miles of trouble free fun. A great car, but now with a baby and all the products he drags along with him, we decided to replace it with a vehicle with greater cargo capacity. As an additional surprise the WRX has been replaced by a Highlander. I know, I know ... it's an SUV, the very vehicle I thought I would never buy. However, we were able to find a lightly used hybrid version at a reasonable outlay of cash. So now I have gone from working on tight corning to perfecting gasoline efficiency. Its not a sports car but so far the Highlander is working out nicely.

Of course, now the question is ... what should I do about my site's logo?

walking with support now
can go up but not down stairs
looked quite dapper on Easter
has a top tooth coming in
has now been to 12 states

Baby Boom: 2007 is the winner

A preliminary report from the CDC is showing that 2007 might be a record year for the number of births in the US. An estimated 4,317,119 births in 2007 is 1% more than in 2006. (chart)

We have had local evidence of a baby boom just among our circle of friends and family, so perhaps 2008 will be another banner year. Around here we've been speculating that pregnancy is contagious. The fact that the CDC (Center for Disease Control) compiled this report only adds support to this theory.

Forward Movement

For a few weeks now, Jakoby has been able to freely rotate around on his stomach and too push himself backwards. This usually allowed him to move around until he got backed up to a piece of furniture at which which point the crying would start.

Yesterday evening Jakoby made his first forward movement in the crawling method. I am trying to make a distinction here since he has been able to lunge forward from a seated position (leave him trashing about on his stomach) or by pushing off from something. For now, he can only make single small moves forward but I am sure he'll get the hang of it before too long.

UPDATE: Sunday afternoon (March 1), Jakoby definitely crawled on hands and knees. Plus, I was able to capture video of it happening for your enjoyment.

Jakoby's first Christmas experience has come and gone. Personally, I'm not sure why people make such a big deal of these things. He enjoyed the wrapping paper but I am sure that he won't remember which noisy gifts he receive this year. Other milestones are much more notable. Since my last post, he can now pull himself up to a standing position and has cut his first tooth.

Not only did Jakoby turn 5 months on Sunday, but he was also dedicated in front of the body of believers at Grace Chapel. With God's help and the help of our friends and family, we hope to raise Jakoby to be the man God intends.

And speaking of friends and family, several were able to be in attendance and to celebrate with us at our house afterwards. Photos here

Oatmeal, Halloween and the Tongue

Last week Jakoby had his 4 month pediatrician appointment. He has doubled his birth weight to 15 lbs 7 oz, lengthened out to 25.5 inches from head to toe. And his head size has increased to 44.25 cm which is in the 91st percentile for his age! He also received two more shots, smiling through the first one, and bursting into tears for the second.

They also told us we could start feeding him "solid" foods so on Wednesday he had his first taste of oatmeal. He did very well opening his mouth to accept the food without having more than half of it ending up on his bib.

Friday was of course Halloween. He had a short costume session with his friend Anna.

And to end this little update, today when I came home from work, Jakoby began demonstrating how far he could stick out his tongue and how long he could do so. He is growing so fast it is amazing ... which is exactly what so many have told would happen.

Walk'n the Greenway

Saturday we were initially planning driving along the coast south of Boston but in the morning learned that the inaugural celebration of the Rose Kennedy Greenway was going on. This greenway, or series of urban parks, is located along the former I-93 raised expressway going through Boston. For the most part, where the expressway moved underground there now exists these parks at street level. These additions to the city are the most beautiful and arguably best part of the $22 billion boondoggle known as the Big Dig.

In any case, we did change our plans to take in the festivities which included concerts, a farmers market, demonstrations, free food and activities for the kiddies (those over a few months of age). We only took a few pictures of the trip and surprisingly almost none of them really show you the Greenway itself. Our walk took us from Columbus Park to Chinatown and back. Thank the Lord for such a beautiful day.

Truth in the Coin Shop

"And who decides what the values of these old coins are? The coins might bear the likeness of a politician. They might bear the name of the nation-state. But these pictures and slogans are merely interlopers on the real point. What you hold is valuable not because some legislature, treasury department, or central bank says it is valuable. Its worth was and is dictated by the market, which is to say, the choices and values of human beings. No government can add to or take away this value except by physically manipulating the coin itself."

A Change In Plans

Our vacation plans were derailed this past Friday. The itinerary originally went as such: Drive to the Finger Lakes in New York Friday evening and Saturday morning, attend a wedding on Saturday and then drive to Ontario to visit friends for a few days before coming back on Thursday. All that change very quickly in the wee hours of Friday morning which resulted in a weekend stay at a lovely resort by the name of Children's Hospital.

Pregnancy Update

We are now just over 4 weeks to our due date. Crazy, isn't it? Just wanted to relay a few items. Three weekends ago we attend a Prepared Childbirth class conducted by Isis Maternity, hosted at Wild Child in Arlington. This is not the breathing class most people think of, rather it is a class on the logistics of the days leading up to and immediately following childbirth. And two weekends ago we took a guided tour of Beth Israel Deaconess' maternity ward. It was good to know A) how to get to the hospital and B) where to take Becky once we got there. This is very important information. And the day before that was Becky's baby shower hosted by her mother. Our thanks to the friends and family members who came to celebrate.

Last week the doctor told Becky that the baby is currently a little above average in terms of weight. This equates to about an 8 pound baby at birth.

Also thought I should announce that Becky has started a blog about our attempts to use cloth diapers from planning and researching to first use to ... well, we just have to see.
